Abstract

Works of art tell stories

Luca Signorelli’s Apocalypse represents a timeless yet timely prophecy, a vision of the future that will come true, or perhaps is already unfolding now. In a confused world, the Antichrist seduces his followers by captivating words, generating the chaos of corruption and violence by the deceptive power that will govern the minds and hearts of nations. And yet there remain the few virtuous men who respond to the signs in heaven and earth that herald destruction and death, and inaugurate the rebirth of a new humanity based on mutual help, friendship and concord, knowledge and peace, and the perfect love that gives without asking for anything in return.

Signorelli’s Apocalypse is no less than a vision of a utopian city of the future, the New City that arises from the ruins of the previous one. In sum, this remarkable fresco depicting the fate of the world remains unexpectedly current!
